How Does Gender Affect the Teaching Profession?
Since an early age women have been confined to household duties and were at first never exposed to the workforce. Through time women developed their own house into a place to learn. It at first was simple things like how they cook and clean but then they soon developed into speech. Many boys started off learning more on speech and writing because traditionally they had men in the workforce and women doing cooking and cleaning at home. Fast forward many years later we have now flipped the poportions in teachers. Men at first were the predominate teachers in actual schools. Now there is less men teachers. Most men in the education industry are superadtendents, principles, or in a coaching role. In elementary schools women are the majority and there are a couple of reasons for that. In elementary education there is no sports but just gym or physical education. Also, women tend to have a better connection with younger kids because of their nurturing and compassionate heart. With this being said I do not think that gender will represent how good of a teacher you are.
I truly believe it is all about how the teacher teaches and helps their students. Any person can just read words off a board. What matters is how they care for their students and make sure anyone feels inclluded. MAny times students can feel not included because of things like gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and even socail status. Students should feel included no matter what they go through. Any student that feels unsure of their gender too should have a good support system from not only their parents but their teachers around them. Especially because some teachers can spend more time with the students then their own parents. My hopes for teachers is that they show students that no matter what you are you can be whoever you want now and when you grow up!
Hi Jordan! It is crazy some of the things that women had to go through to get to where they are today. While it is true that women are better suiters for working with young children due to our compassionate nature, as you had mentioned, I think it's insane that women were only degraded to that kind of role. I am so glad that is beginning to change! It has been a slow, non-linear process, but many changes have been made. I have the same hope for future educators that you do; it is most important that we treat our students with respect no matter where they came from! Loved the blog post.
