What rights should be protected for students and teachers?
I as a future teacher want to promise myself and my future students that I will uphold and help fight for rights as a person, student, and learner in my classroom. I really want my students to feel that all of their rights are there for them. I don't feel that students should feel almost trapped in a cage with no rights. As a student I always heard that to students school felt like a prison and they felt trapped without rights. Even as they grow older they still had this hard mindset and it makes me feel sad. I had teachers that let me express my rights in school and that made me pretty much not hate school. I want to have my students understand that they can have the freedom to express their rights anytime they please. I most importantly want to protect my students freedom of speech and religion. I feel that these are one of the most important aspects in a students life. Yes these rights can be abused in some ways but that is up to them. I understand that we do not necessarily want our students cussing up a storm in class but it is important for students to be heard. That is the whole point of our country that each person can be heard. Students can lash out and do bad things just because they feel like they don't have a voice and are not being heard. I know that these students may just be 20 percent of the population but they are a 100 percent the future! We need to have their back when it comes to speech and religion because not everyone will! :))
Hello Jordan,
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean when you say that sometimes students lash out becuase they feel like they don't have a voice. I feel like this happens to all of us, where we might be having a bad day and sometimes there's that one thing that tics us off and drives us off the edge to react in a way we wouldn't have if we were more collected. I respect others to share their thoughts and if a student happens to have a bad day and lash out, then I will allow it if it doesn't result in violence. I know not every home setting provides an environment where the kid can express themselves freely, listen to the songs they want, watch the same shows as their peers or even eat junk food. On top of that they get to School and are told what to do almost every second, I would feel on edge if I didn’t get to do what I wanted to do once too. I plan in the future to allow my students to express how they feel in their journals for the first ten minutes of class. I remember having an English teacher who allowed me to do this every day and feeling relived at the end. I value my students freedom of speech as much as I value mines.
I value your journal activity. I also think its a great way for students to express themselves in a productive way!
